When the Storm Comes

Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening had come, He told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” 36 So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in the boat. And other boats were with Him. 37 A fierce windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke Him up and said to Him, “Teacher! Don’t You care that we’re going to die?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they were terrified and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Jesus and His disciples were by the sea.  So many people had come to hear Him, He got into a boat and went out from shore to teach. When it started to get dark, He stayed in the boat and told the disciples they were going to the other side of the sea. There were other boats with them. Jesus was not only fully God, He was also fully man. He was exhausted from teaching all day. So He went into the back of the boat and went to sleep. When a storm came up, those on the boat with Him became terrified. They woke Him up, like he didn’t know what was going on!  After He rebuked the storm, He rebuked the disciples. You get the impression that they had just flunked the test. After all, He had commanded them to go to the other side of the sea. Jesus asked, “Do you still have no faith?”

When you are obeying a command from the Lord, and you get in a storm, maybe you say, “Is this right? Are we going the right way?” Remember, He is in the boat with you. Maybe He wants you to rebuke the storm through His power. He wouldn’t put you in a situation that He can’t handle. And what about the other ships with you? They will be watching to see how you handle the storm.

When it seems circumstances are arrayed against you, use it as an opportunity to strengthen your faith. We need to remember that at this point in time, He never sleeps.
